The GSFL and the University of York’s Department of Language and Linguistic Sciences Joint 2019 Scholarship for an Intensive Course in Forensic Speech and Audio Analysis
General Information
The Germanic Society for Forensic Linguistics, the Department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York (UK), and JP French Associates are offering a special scholarship program for GSFL members to attend an intensive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course in Forensic Speech and Audio Analysis scheduled to take place from March 25-27, 2019 (Monday-Wednesday) at the University of York (UK). The Course
The course provides intensive instruction in both the theory and practice of forensic speech and audio analysis. In addition to being introduced to underlying concepts and principles, participants will gain hands-on experience of analysing real casework recordings. The 2019 Scholarships Offered
There are three different scholarships being offered:
- ONE FULL SCHOLARSHIP for either a student or non-student member of the GSFL to attend the CPD. The GSFL will pay 100% of the CPD course. This scholarship does not cover travel and accommodation. However, scholarship winners are eligible to apply for special housing arrangements for the duration of the course. The exact details will be provided directly to scholarship recipients when notified of their award.
- ONE PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP for either a student or non-student member of the GSFLto attend the CPD. For this scholarship, the GSFL will pay 50% of the total cost for the CPD course. For non-student scholarship winners, the GSFL will pay 463 GBP; and for student scholarship winners, the GSFL will pay 400 GBP. Winners of this award will be ressponsible for paying the remaining 50% of the CPD. This scholarship does not cover travel and accommodation. However, scholarship winners are eligible to apply for special housing arrangements for the duration of the course. The exact details will be provided directly to scholarship recipients when notified of their award.
- TWO SPACES TO ATTEND THE CPD will be reserved for for GSFL members at a significantly reduced rate. The special rate per person is 925 GBP without accommodation or 1200 GBP with accommodation.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the consideration for this award, all applicants must meet the following pre-requisites:
- be a GSFL member in good-standing
- have a documented high level of proficiency in spoken and written English
- have successfully completed advanced university-level coursework in FL and FP
- complete and return the official application form with the required supplementary material by the designated deadline.
Application Procedure
To apply, members must complete and submit the application form found here and supply the required supplementary documentation to the GSFL President Dr. I. M. Nick (mavi.yaz@web.de). For organizational purposes, please place the code “York19” in the subject line of your email. The deadline for the return of the application materials is midnight (Central European Time) December 15, 2018.
Selection Procedure
All applications received will first be submitted to a blind review by a selection committee of the GSFL Executive Council. In a second and final review phase, the applications that receive the highest ratings by the GSFL selection committee will then be passed on to the Department of Language and Linguistic Science. Based on this collective evaluation, winners for each of the above scholarships will be determined and a waiting list of top alternate candidates will be created. In the event that a scholarship winner is either unable to attend the CPD or fails to confirm his/her attendance by the specified deadline, his/her space will be offered to an alternate on the waiting list. Official notification about the winners of the scholarship will be sent by January 11, 2019.
Rules and Regulations
- All of the scholarships are non-transferrable. As space for this competitive award is extremely limited, recipients will be required to send written confirmation of their scholarship acceptance by January 25, 2019. The GSFL will disburse the funds for the scholarship directly to the University of York once award winners have formally confirmed their acceptance. Scholarship winners will also be required at this time to indicate whether they would like accommodation arranged for them via the University of York. Please note that failure to send confirmation by this deadline will result in forfeiture of the scholarship. Unclaimed awards will be re-allocated to another scholarship applicant selected by the GSFL Selection Committee.
- Scholarship winners who are unable to attend the CPD after formally accepting an award, must immeidately notify both Dr. I. M. Nick (mavi.yaz@web.de) and the University of York Coordinator James Tompkinson (jt656@york.ac.uk) in writing by February 11, 2019, midnight (Central European Time). If notice is received by this deadline, the scholarship award will be rescinded and all fees will be reversed. In the event of a late notice or failure to complete the program, the scholarship winner will be held financially liable for all fees as the award will be cancelled but the fees will NOT be reversed.
- All scholarship recipients will also be expected to complete and return a feedback survey after completing the CPD. The data received from these questionnaires will be used to design subsequent CPD offerings.
